About Readee

The facts about Readee on one page: what it is, who it is for, what is free, what it costs and who made it. Updated 20 October 2026.

What Readee is

Readee is a reading app for children in kindergarten through 4th grade. It teaches reading the way the Science of Reading describes: explicit, structured and sound-first. The lessons are written by Jennifer Klingerman, a certified reading specialist who teaches 3rd grade. Readee is made by Readee Learning LLC, a company in New Jersey, and launched in 2026. The app runs at learn.readee.app.

Who it is for

  • Children aged 5 to 10, from kindergarten through 4th grade.
  • Children who are behind in reading, and children who are ahead and want more.
  • Parents who want to know their child's reading level and what to practice next.
  • One child per account. There is no classroom version.

How the reading assessment works

  • It takes about ten minutes and it is free.
  • The child reads word lists and a short passage aloud and answers listening questions.
  • Luna, the app's tutor, listens and scores each word. A child who is not yet reading words is given letter sounds and blending instead, by tapping.
  • The test adapts to the answers and stops when the level is clear.
  • The parent gets a report covering word reading, independent reading and listening understanding, with a starting level and the first lesson to take.

What is free

  • The reading assessment and the full report.
  • One complete lesson, with teaching and practice, chosen from the report.
  • All 25 decodable stories, five for each grade from kindergarten to 4th.
  • Today's Daily Readee: one short reading a day with recorded narration and questions.
  • The Daily Readee and the 25 stories are readable by any signed-in free family.

What Readee+ includes and costs

  • Price: $9.99 a month, or $83.88 a year ($6.99 a month billed yearly). One child per account.
  • Trial: a 7-day free trial of Readee+, no card needed, started inside the app after the free lesson. It ends on its own unless you choose a plan.
  • Included: the full lesson journey built from the assessment, all practice, Luna reading along word by word and writing personalized stories, the Daily Readee archive, and a weekly report for the parent.
  • Cancel any time in Settings. Full details are on the pricing page.

Method

  • Each lesson has three parts: a narrated lesson of about ten minutes, standards-aligned practice questions, and a mastery check.
  • more than 200 core lessons across kindergarten to 4th grade and more than 1,800 practice questions, all aligned to Common Core English Language Arts standards.
  • Every lesson is narrated by a recorded voice, so a child who cannot read the instructions yet can still follow them.
  • The journey starts at the skill the assessment found and revisits skills a child is starting to forget.

Devices

Readee is a web app. It runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, with no download. It is not in the App Store or Google Play. Reading aloud needs a microphone, which every phone, tablet and laptop has.

Privacy

Readee is built to COPPA. There are no third-party ads and no sale of data. The privacy policy has the full terms.

Questions parents ask

Is Readee free?

Part of it is. The reading assessment, the full report, one complete lesson with practice, 25 decodable stories and today's Daily Readee are free for one child per account. The ongoing lesson journey, all practice and Luna are in Readee+, which costs $9.99 a month or $83.88 a year, with a 7-day free trial and no card needed.

What ages is Readee for?

Children aged 5 to 10, in kindergarten through 4th grade. The assessment places a child by reading level, not by age, so a 4th grader who reads at a 1st grade level starts with 1st grade skills.

Does Readee work on a phone?

Yes. Readee is a web app at learn.readee.app and runs in the browser on a phone, a tablet or a computer. Reading aloud to Luna uses the device microphone; the browser asks for permission once.

How long is the reading assessment?

About ten minutes. The child reads word lists and a short passage aloud and answers listening questions; the test adapts as it goes and stops early when the level is clear. The parent gets the report straight after.

Is Readee based on the Science of Reading?

Yes. Lessons teach reading the structured, explicit, sound-first way: phonemic awareness, phonics, decodable text, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, in that order of priority. They are written by a certified reading specialist and aligned to Common Core standards for K to 4.

How is Readee different from Reading Eggs, HOMER or Hooked on Phonics?

Readee finds the specific gap first: a spoken ten-minute placement, then a written report naming the skills to work on and the first lesson to start, free with no end date, alongside one complete lesson, 25 decodable stories and the daily reading. Of the three, only Reading Eggs describes a placement quiz on its site, and it sets a lesson level rather than writing a report; HOMER and Hooked on Phonics ask the parent to choose the starting level. They are larger, older products with wider age ranges, native apps and in two cases a physical kit; Readee is one teacher's K to 4 curriculum, web only, one child per account. The compare pages linked below have the row-by-row table, our take, and the dated sources.

Can a teacher use Readee?

Readee is built for families: one child per account, on Free or Readee+. There is no classroom or district version yet. Teachers who want to talk about one can email hello@readee.app.

How do I cancel Readee+?

In the app, open Settings and choose Cancel Readee+. Access continues to the end of the period already paid for, and nothing further is charged. There is no phone call and no retention form.

Is my child's data safe?

Readee is built to COPPA, the US law covering children under 13. There are no third-party ads and no sale of data; payments go through Stripe, so Readee never sees a card number. A child's voice recordings are stored privately and used only to assess and teach reading.

Do you have an app in the App Store or Google Play?

No. Readee is a web app only. Open learn.readee.app in the browser on any device, and add it to the home screen if you want an icon.
