Word lists that step up, or down, until the words get hard. Up to 25 words. Kindergartners start with letter sounds and blend sounds out loud.

Reading
Two short texts at each level, a story and one about facts, read cold. The first minute is timed, then your child finishes at their own pace. Three questions on each, with the text still on screen.

Who built it, and what it is scored against
Every word list, story and question was written and reviewed by Jennifer Klingerman, who has a Master's in Reading and is teaching 3rd grade right now.
Word lists and texts step up by grade, and every skill maps to the Common Core standard for that grade. The report describes what your child read today; it is not a national percentile.

Every child deserves to feel confident when they read.
I'm a reading teacher with over 6 years of experience teaching kindergarten through 5th grade, and I'm currently teaching 3rd grade. I have my Master's in Reading from Slippery Rock University and my bachelor's in Elementary Education from West Chester University.
I created Readee because I've seen too many children struggle with reading simply because they haven't been taught the skills they need.

Before you start
- My child cannot really read yet. Is this still for them?
- Yes. If the word lists show they are not reading words yet, Luna switches to letter sounds and blending, tapped rather than spoken, and the report tells you where to start.
- What if my child gets stuck or frustrated?
- There is an I don't know button on every word, and saying it out loud works too. Luna moves on without comment. The assessment is built to find the edge of what they can do, so hitting hard words is the design, not a failure.
- Do I need a microphone?
- Any laptop, tablet or phone microphone works. The browser will ask for permission once. Your child's recording is stored privately and is never sold or used for advertising.
- How do I ask my child to do it?
- Do not call it a test. Try: there is a bunny that wants to hear you read, it takes ten minutes. A child who thinks they are being assessed reads differently from a child who is just reading.
- What if my child stops halfway?
- Stop any time. What was measured before you stopped still counts and you can pick it up later. Ten minutes of a reluctant reader's cooperation is a bigger ask than ten minutes of yours, and the check is built to survive it.
- What if my child is fine?
- Plenty are. The report will say so, and you do not need us. We would rather you found that out in ten free minutes than paid us to tell you.
- Is it actually free?
- Yes. The assessment and the full report cost nothing, and the report is yours to keep whether you go any further or not.
