Why Readee

A reading teacher made this. Because the games weren't cutting it.

We started Readee because Jen kept watching kids tap cartoon buttons for hours and still arrive at her classroom unable to decode a sentence. Real lessons, real practice, built around how kids actually learn to read.

Made by a reading teacher

Jen has a Master's in Reading and years of teaching K-3. She still teaches. She wrote every lesson, every question, every word.

How reading actually works

Phonics, fluency, comprehension, the science the best schools use. No gimmicks.

PhonicsFluencyComprehension

Phonics you can hear

Every lesson plays each sound, /k/, /æ/, /t/, so kids hear it, not just see it.

A note from Jen

I've taught a thousand kids to read.I made this for the rest of them.

I'm a reading teacher. K through 3rd grade for years. I have a Master's in Reading. I still teach.

For every kid I get to teach in a year, ten more never get the instruction they actually need. Most reading apps don't teach reading. They reward tapping. Kids tap for hours and still can't read a sentence.

Readee is what I teach in the classroom, phonics, sounding out, fluency, comprehension, turned into ten-minute lessons a kid can do at the kitchen table. I wrote every lesson. I look at every question. The bunny is cute but the reading is the serious part.

If your kid is struggling, you're not alone, and they don't have to keep struggling. Try the free placement test. We'll tell you exactly where they are and what to do next.

How we're different

Most reading apps are games with reading bolted on.

We're reading lessons with a little game on top. Here's what that means in plain terms.

What parents look for
Readee
Other apps
  • Made by a working reading teacher

Jen wrote every lesson. Most apps were built by tech teams.

  • Photo a worksheet → matched practice

Snap any school worksheet, get a practice set on the same skill.

  • Live voice tutor your kid can talk to

Reading Buddy listens, helps with hard words, asks comprehension questions.

  • Adaptive placement across 5 reading skills

Phonics, vocabulary, literal + inferential comprehension, fluency. Not just a grade-level guess.

  • Every piece checked for quality before kids see it

12 automated checks per passage, question, image, and audio file. Wikipedia fact-check on non-fiction.

  • Fresh content every day, not a frozen library

New daily reading every morning. New articles across 7 categories every day.

  • Spaced repetition so skills actually stick

Readee notices what your kid is starting to forget and brings it back before it slips.

  • Zero third-party ads. Ever.

We never sell student data. We never run ads.

    Some
  • Aligned to Common Core (K–4)

Most reading programs hit this, it's table stakes.

We're not bashing other apps. Jen tried them with her own students for years. They just weren't teaching reading. So we built something that does.

  • Encourages reading aloud, coaches pronunciation gently
  • Remembers across sessions so it builds on yesterday

Dashboard

Kid's home base

Avatar, level, streak, today's goal. One tap to whatever's next.

How it works

3 steps to confident reading

Test, learn, see it click. The whole thing fits into ten minutes a day.

  1. Take the free placement test

Twenty quick adaptive questions tell us exactly where your kid is reading, anywhere from kindergarten to 4th grade.

  2. Readee builds a path

Lessons in the order that makes sense for your kid, starting at the right level. Not too easy, not the wall they keep hitting in class.

  3. You can see it working

Parent reports show what they nailed and what they're still working on. No more guessing what 'on grade level' means.

Compete. Earn. Read more.

Beat your friends. Become the best reader.

Kids earn carrots for every lesson, story, and streak, then watch the weekly leaderboard to see how they stack up against friends and classmates. It's the rare kind of screen time parents actually cheer for.

  • Daily streaks that unlock new avatars and backgrounds
  • Weekly leaderboard, private to your family
  • Badges for milestones that actually matter (fluency, not vibes)
The 12-check pipeline

Researchers found 1 in 5 reading appsaren't fit for kids. Ours has guardrails.

Every passage, question, image, and audio file we make passes through 12 automated checks before any kid sees it. If a piece fails, it gets rewritten or thrown out, it never quietly ships.

Reading level

Flesch-Kincaid graded per target grade. If it's too hard or too easy, it goes back.

Word safety

Zero tolerance for profanity, slurs, or age-inappropriate vocabulary.

Pedagogy review

Every question rated by an LLM judge, does it actually test the skill it claims to?

Answer support

The correct MCQ answer must be backed by evidence in the passage. No guessing games.

Image quality

AI-judged for broken anatomy, extra fingers, mangled text, off-brand style.

Audio quality

Every voice file rated for clarity, pacing, and TTS glitches before it ships.

Adversarial review

A second AI judge intentionally tries to break it, catches subtle errors the first judge misses.

Wikipedia fact-check

Non-fiction passages grounded against Wikipedia. No making things up about real people.

Portrait verification

If a historical figure is named, we visually compare the image to the Wikipedia portrait.

MCQ distractor balance

Correct-answer slots are evenly distributed so kids can't game position.

Standards fidelity

Every question tied to a specific Common Core standard, no random questions.

Topic deduplication

Embedding search prevents the catalog from giving your kid the same Edison story three times.

Most reading apps don't tell you how they vet AI content, or whether they do at all. We'd rather be specific than pretend it doesn't matter.

Pricing

My 6-year-old went from hating reading time to asking if he can do 'one more Readee' before bed. The lessons actually click.

Our daughter has ADHD and the 10-minute lessons are the sweet spot. She finishes, she feels proud, she's actually reading.

My son started asking when his "reading time" was. That's never happened before. The lessons are short enough that he doesn't burn out.

Parent of 2nd grader
The placement test was spot on. It put my son exactly where he needed to be instead of frustrating him with material that was too easy.

FAQ

Everything parents ask us

Short, honest answers. Still wondering something? Email hello@readee.app.

  • Free for the placement test, the first lesson per grade, 10 practice questions per skill, two stories per grade, the daily reading, and the public Community library. Readee+ is $9.99/month or $6.99/month if you pay yearly (saves 30%). The full library, Reading Buddy, Homework Scanner, Ask Readee, and parent reports. Start with a 7-day free trial. • Five to ten, kindergarten through 4th grade. The placement test figures out where they are and the lessons go from there.

  • About 10 minutes. We built it for the kid who's done after a snack and a song. Consistency beats marathons.

  • Most reading apps are games with reading bolted on. Readee is reading lessons with a little game on top. Phonics, decodable stories, comprehension. The same approach the best literacy programs use in schools.

  • They're real products and some kids do fine on them. The differences: Readee was built by a working reading teacher (not a tech company), every piece of content runs through a 12-check quality pipeline before kids see it (most apps don't disclose what they check), and we have features the other apps don't have. The snap-a-photo Homework Scanner, the live voice Reading Buddy, multi-skill placement (not just 'grade level'). We also don't run ads or pad lessons with games. If you're paying $9.99 anyway, that's what you're paying for.

  • Every passage, question, image, and audio file goes through 12 automated checks before any kid sees it. We grade reading level. We fact-check non-fiction against Wikipedia. We look at every question for clarity. Anything that fails gets rewritten or thrown out. Jen also spot-audits the catalog regularly and personally signs off on the lesson content.

  • Yes. Readee was designed from day one to work for every kid, including those with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, processing differences, or who simply learn at a different pace. Predictable structure, calm visuals, short sessions, audio on every single piece of text, and consistent pacing. A lot of our families come to us after trying flashier apps that overwhelmed their reader. Many tell us Readee is the first one that finally clicked.

  • A live voice partner. Your kid can read aloud to it, ask what a word means, or have it tell them a story on the spot. It remembers what you've read together across days.

  • Yes. We're COPPA and FERPA compliant. We don't sell student data. We don't run third-party ads. Payments go through Stripe.

  • Email hello@readee.app. We're focused on the family product right now but a handful of schools are already using Readee, happy to chat.
