Readee grew out of Ms. Klingerman’s work in the classroom. She saw children struggling with reading skills they’d never been taught and wanted families to have a way to practice those skills at home.

Readee Learning LLC operates Readee, a live, subscription-based K–4 reading platform. Families can use it today in a web browser, starting with a free reading assessment and report. Readee+ adds ongoing personalized instruction, teacher-authored educational content, and reading practice with Luna.
Co-founders Jennifer Klingerman and Filip Galietti lead the curriculum and product. Readee is in active development: we continue to review lessons and improve the learning experience.
Why it exists
I kept meeting children who had not been taught the skills.
I have taught kindergarten through 5th grade for over six years, and I am in a 3rd grade classroom right now. Most of the children I meet who cannot read are not children who cannot learn. They were taught to guess at a word from the picture, or to memorise it as a shape, and then the words got longer than their memory.
So Readee teaches it the way I teach it. Sounds first, then words, then sentences. Ten minutes, the same shape every day.

What a lesson teaches
Five skills, in order.
In 2000 the National Reading Panel named the five things children need in order to read. They are not a secret and they are not new. The difficult part is teaching all five, in order, without skipping the boring one.

Hearing the sounds
Noticing the parts inside a word. The first sound, the middle sound, the rhyme. Children have to hear a word before they can read it.

Phonics
What sound each letter makes, and how to push them together into a word. Everything else sits on top of this.

Reading smoothly
Reading fast enough that there is room left over to think about the sentence, instead of spending it all on the words.

Vocabulary
Meeting a new word enough times that it sticks, so the next time it turns up it is already familiar.

Understanding it
What was that about. Who did what, and why. This is the part everything else was for.
